A few years back, I joined with Michelle Zive for a "how to take better portraits" article for San Diego Family Magazine. See it here for some simple tips that will get you taking better pictures right now.
here is a good link for some portrait photography tips
The purpose of this section of my site is simple...
to help you take better pictures!
Please understand I do not get anything in return for these recommendations. I am offering them to you because they helped me.
I'll start with telling you my philosophy on photography. I divide photography into two sides, the technical side & the artistic side. Having an education in Art, my desire for photography came strongly, and for a long time only, from the artistic side. I resisted the technical stuff. I'm not sure why....I'm lying, I do know why...I'm an artist! The art is what I love, my passion! Not f stops and fractions. Where is the passion in shutter speed? But looking back I was kind of dumb not learning some of the technical things first. I truly believe my photography would have developed (pardon the pun)at a a much faster pace if I would have taken the time to learn what my camera can do & how to do it. Not having this knowledge made my journey into photography much more difficult than it had to be.
So, I am going to start you off with learning how to use your camera. We will get to the art of photography very soon.
If you are in my area I highly recommend taking the intro class at the San Diego In-Focus Learning Center.
Rod will quickly have you off of the auto setting and on to M (manual, gasp!). In just 4 short classes you will have a broad & in depth understanding of what your camera can do and gain control of the images you create, and that, my friend, is a very cool thing. This is the kind of knowledge that will validate you as a photographer. The class is worth the $175 fee.if you are not in San Diego or you prefer a book, I recommend UNDERSTANDING EXPOSURE by Bryan Peterson.
